Providing a huge (8.5 acre) habitat,Dewar Wildlife Trustis the only private, AZA-certified facility in the world for gorillas. It is not open to the public, although private tours and regularly-scheduled tours are available. One of its goal was to build a holding facility to house gorillas that could not otherwise be housed at normal zoos due to various social or medical problems. In July 2012, the Trust has initiated a partnership with Zoo Atlanta. They got their first gorilla in March 2003. It was a wild born male called Joe, who arrived to Dewar Wildlife Trust from Gladys Porter Zoo. They never housed females on its short history and that made imposible the breeding of gorillas at this location.
