Kobe Oji Zoo opened its doors to the public in 1928, but on March 21st 1951 it was moved to its current location at Hyogo Prefecture. Having a total area of 80.618 square meters, they keep a total of 138 species including some endangered ones like giant pandas, amur and snow leopards, tigers or koalas between many others. Their first gorilla, an eight years old male called Zaak, arrived to Kobe Oji Zoo in September 1963 directly from Africa. Years later, they imported two more couples in attempt to breed, but as up to date, they did not have luck.
