The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is a 170-acre (69 ha) zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden located along the Saluda River in Columbia. It opened on April 25th 1974 and is home to over 2,000 animals, with collections of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish. The major exhibits of the zoo are African Plains, Aquarium Reptile Complex, Ndoki Forest, Riverbanks Farm. Riverbanks Zoo is a recent home to gorillas, as its first habitants arrived from Lincoln Park Zoo in June 2001. They were Kumba, Kowali, Kwanza and Bulera. In may 2004, that family group returned to Chicago and a bachelor group arrived to Riverbanks, so no gorilla babies were born at this zoological institution yet.
